Saltwater Aquariums: What You Need To Know!
Saltwater aquariums bring much pleasure to their owners. Whether you are interested in exotic saltwater fish, beautiful corals, or even live rocks, a saltwater aquarium will exceed your expectations in terms of beauty and functionality. You can literally watch a mini recreated ecosystem develop and change in front of your very eyes in a relatively short amount of time.
Many saltwater aquarists have successfully maintained tropical fish tanks, however some people choose to make saltwater their first fish keeping experience and this is fine. You may have heard that it's harder to keep saltwater fish. This is not altogether true and you should definitely not be afraid of the challenge that lies ahead.
With the right advice, keeping a saltwater aquarium is no more difficult than keeping a tropical aquarium. It just depends on your dedication and willingness to learn the ropes.
When setting up your first saltwater tank, you'll need some or all of the following:
- Aquarium - the bigger the better! Smaller tanks are generally harder to maintain.
- Saltwater Mix
- Saltwater Hydrometer
- Filter
- Powerheads
- Thermometer
- Power Strip
- Heater
- Live Rock - This is optional but certainly adds to the aquarium.
- Protein Skimmer
- Vacuum - a vacuum specifically made for aquariums.
- Fish food - different types of food depending on your fish species.
- Buckets - for water changes. Five gallon buckets should do.
Your local aquarium store will be able to advice you on any other accessories you will require. Remember that you don't have to spend a fortune to get the basic tank running. You should start with a simple tank and then build it up from there. This is the best way to get the hang of the fish keeping process, particularly if you have never owned an aquarium of any type before. I certainly don't suggest purchasing large numbers of fish to start with. I generally purchase 3 or 4 fish once my tank is ready and then 2-3 extra fish at a time.
